Konstadinoupole, apart from its famous cuisine, is also famous for the excellent distillery. One of the famous ouzo labels hailing from the City is that of ”Babajim.”
The company history starts in 1875 with headquarters in Balata, founded by Anestis Babatzimopoulos of Stavros, a very capable, persistent and successful man. With 750 acres of vineyards owned, in the Delliones Selymbria, a province of Konstantinople, he managed to build the plant in 1893. It is said that the name Babajim, which in Turkish means ”our esteemed father” or ”daddy” was given by the workers themselves, who called him so because he was appreciated and loved infinitely.
In 1922 the family settled in Chrysoupoli Kavala. In 1937 the founder of the company died, and one year later his ouzo won the gold medal at the International Thessaloniki Fair for its quality. The secret recipe is moved with respect and love from generation to generation. Today the third generation is ready to hand over the baton to the fourth generation, confident that the unique taste of ouzo “Babajim”,’ based on this old secret recipe of our ancestors, will remain intact.
