Eurostat: Online shopping for 67% of the EU population

67% of the EU population bought goods or services online in 2021, according to data released by Eurostat.

More specifically, a higher percentage of purchasing goods or services via the internet was recorded in three regions of the Netherlands (93%). More generally, there was a very high tendency to use e-commerce in almost all regions of the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The lowest percentages of purchases via the Internet are recorded in regions of Bulgaria (27%).

Moreover, around 58% of the EU population used the internet for banking in 2021. At least 90% of people used online banking in every region of Denmark, Finland, and 8 out of 12 regions in the Netherlands. The lowest percentages of banking transactions via the Internet (under 25%) are recorded in regions of Bulgaria and Romania, as well as in the region of central Greece.
