Domestic industries turn to innovative dairy products

The increase of the added value of Greek dairy products, the strengthening of innovation and their competitiveness are central objectives of the most important dairy industries in the Greek market.

There have been several moves in this direction in recent years, as there has been an interconnection between scientific institutions and industry, in order to create innovative products and services, aiming to increase the competitiveness of Greek industries. Apart from plant-based beverages, which most domestic dairy companies have incorporated into their portfolio, the rising vegan movement is bringing plant-based substitutes for other product groups, such as cheese, to the fore. Nevertheless, dairy products are a stable choice for the Greek consumer, as plant-based substitutes are mainly aimed at those who follow a specialised diet and are characterised by significantly higher costs than conventional dairy products.

The main ‘competitor’ to conventional milk is almond milk, mainly because of its low calories, a milk substitute that has been established in the minds and preferences of consumers abroad for several years.
